Forgiving / Asking to be Forgiven: A Poem

Everyone has a history
Of suffering and pain –
Nations of a distant past,
Nations today.

Blood of our Fathers,
Our Mothers with fears,
Their children are hungry,
Children in tears.

Wars raging in the snow
In old times and new.
Wars raging in our soul,
Our hurt so imbued.

Refrain:
But it’s in hurt we learn the most
It is in pain we grow so strong
In the words of St. Francis:
“It’s in pardoning that we are pardoned
It’s in giving we receive
It is in dying we are born to eternal life.”

While we’ve been victims,
We’ve hurt others too.
Instead of contrition
Our pride is our glue.

Blood on our weapons
In the past and today;
We fail to ask for forgiveness –
Is it weakness we disdain?

Why are we silent
Or turn the other way?
When openness is needed
To build a better day…

Refrain:
It is in being wrong we learn.
When we sincerely repent
We all start to heal.
In the words of St. Francis:
“Make us an instrument of peace,
Where there’s injury your pardon Lord
It is in dying we are born to eternal life.”
